Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for towing underground
   • Access, interpret and apply towing in underground metalliferous mines documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Select appropriate type of towing equipment according to job type and specifications, and check equipment for serviceability and rectify or report any faults
   • Communicate with other equipment operators and personnel using approved communication methods
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
   • Ensure area is well ventilated before entry into work area
2. Shackle and hitch vehicle/equipment
   • Carry out equipment pre-start checks and start-up procedures
   • Identify towing/lifting points on vehicle/equipment
   • Select suitable towing equipment for type and size of vehicle/equipment
   • Hitch towing equipment to vehicle/equipment using approved method
   • Confirm security and balance of hitch prior to commencing tow
3. Tow and unhitch vehicle/equipment
   • Tow vehicle, observing safe driving conventions, and following site procedures for towing
   • Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
   • Monitor condition of ground and hitch and adjust towing accordingly
   • Proceed to destination using the safest and most direct route
   • Unhitch vehicle/equipment in authorised area
4. Carry out post-operational procedures
   • Inspect, fault find and report faults
   • Carry out routine operator servicing, maintenance and housekeeping tasks
   • Clean and store towing vehicle/equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Complete all written documentation and communications clearly, concisely and on time

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of towing underground including:

conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations

carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures

assessing towing options for vehicle/equipment

using relevant tools

driving and operating the vehicles and equipment to site conditions and requirements

applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues

applying problem solving and troubleshooting techniques

works effectively with others to undertake and complete towing underground that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

demonstrates completion of undertaking towing underground that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

selecting correct towing tools and equipment

tow bar

sling

checking and confirming equipment for serviceability

carrying out pre-start checks, start-up, park-up and shut-down procedures

identifying towing points on vehicle

hitch towing equipment to vehicle

towing, steering and manoeuvring vehicle

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when undertaking towing underground:

appropriate towing equipment

equipment processes, technical capability and limitations

geological and technical data (basic)

hazardous goods procedures (handling and transport)

isolation procedures

mine operational systems

signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed

manufacturer’s specifications

driving regulations, rules and conventions

operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics

housekeeping activities
